Kabuki beauty in a bento box

During his travels throughout Japan, Francois Nars became fascinated with Kabuki theatre, and the artistry of it all inspired him to create the Modern Kabuki collection of beauty bento boxes, which make nice gifts for the upcoming holiday season.
The surprise inside the NARS Bento Box Set are two ceramic cups with colours lining the perimeter, for you to dip the accompanying brush and pick a hue to paint your lips. Use a little of the highly-pigmented lip colour for a subtle look and then build up intense colour for a dramatic pout.
Nagauta brush set (7,000 baht).
In Kabuki theatre, Kumadori make-up refers to the use of shades to represent different emotions and moods, for instance, red for passion and vigour, and pink for cheerfulness and youthfulness. One cup has been hand-filled with a red lip colour called Maiko _ the Japanese word for "dancing girl" and apprentice geishas _ while the other cup has a hot pink colour called Sakura, the symbolic cherry blossom that is integral to Japanese culture.
The Hanamichi eyeshadow palette is inspired by the "flower path", the theatre walkway that extends into the audience. With evocative shades found in Japanese theatre, this palette presents floral motifs in rich shimmering deep rose, gold, and matte black.
Named after an element of Kabuki dance, the Kudoki keepsake bento box features three lip colours in the custom ceramic cups, as well as a handmade lip brush with its handle wrapped in wisteria, a flowering plant native to Japan.
Five make-up brushes come together for another bento box, called Nagauta, the principal musical forms in Kabuki theatre.
A set of is six mini eyeshadow pencils is named Mie Kabuki, referring to a moment of high emotion that culminates in an extremely dramatic pose. With just a few strokes, these creamy long-wearing crayons can be blended to create metallic and shimmering eye make-up.

The disaster of donations Some thoughts on relief efforts during the current crisis

During the tsunami that hit Thailand in December 2004 I was just an observer. My son was merely a newborn and it was impossible for me to do any volunteer work with him on my back. Now, living abroad, I can only observe the ongoing deluge on the television.
GONTHONG LOURDESAMY
One of the hottest issues, which happens to be the subject I believe needs to be addressed should another disaster of this magnitude strike again, is the management of donated clothes. It's a pity to see these garments, donated out of good will, disposed of like trash without ever reaching those who need them most.
A friend recalled an incident during the tsunami when disaster victims were queuing up for donated clothes, which they did not receive because ''there were too many to handle''. The image of clothes floating in water at Don Muang Airport painfully recalled the tsunami scenario, and reminded us that there certainly needs to be a better way to manage the donation.
Firstly, a list of what is needed during the emergency must be identified. This is because not all donors know what should be given _ what is necessary and what is not, the latter becoming a burden at times. When it comes to clothes, the list should include T-shirts, shorts and trousers, fishermen's trousers and sarongs (the last two are the best due to their versatility in terms of size) as well as new underwear and towels. This list should be distributed to all volunteer groups and relief units whether government or private agencies.
Secondly, people should separate their donated clothes into categories: womenswear, menswear, infants' clothes (below 2 years old), toddlers' clothes (3 to 6 years old) and big kids' clothes (7 to 12 years old), and clearly labelled on the bag/box so that they are easier for relief staff to sort out.
Finally, donors need to bear in mind that giving clothes to disaster victims isn't the same as trashing your unwanted wardrobe. The clothes should be in wearable condition. The easiest way is that, if you have, say, 15 T-shirts, just spare a few you don't often wear. However, worn, torn and old items can still be used as rags but you should put them together in a bag and label it. These rags will be useful when the water has gone and it's time for the big clean up.
As for those in charge of managing donated items, the initial task is to sort the donated clothes. Since donations will come every day, if you simply throw daily donations together in a corner, they will pile up quickly. The easiest way is to sort them into womenswear, menswear and children's wear, and place each pile in a different corner of the storage room. If you have time to separate each category by size too, it would be immensely useful. You can ask regular volunteers to be stationed at each pile.
The best way to handle clothes is to spread and flatten each piece, then put one over another to make a pile of 20 to 30 pieces, which should be tied together with coloured string. If you have time to find three different colours of string for each pile, all the better. You may get some insight into the professional secret of merchants at Rong Klue market this time round.
Clothes should be distributed to victims daily once they're categorised. The longer you keep them, the greater the chance they'll be difficult to handle and become home to mosquitoes and cockroaches. At the distribution spot, you may ask victims to queue in separate lines for men, women and children. Parents would of course be taking children's clothes, which should already be sorted by age.
It might sound complicated, but with a little effort by both the donating public and the relief staff, we can ensure that these donations reach those who really need them, instead of getting stuck in some relief centre until they are sunk in the flood like the victims.

Sensual colour collection

Expressing our sensuality is now seen as something vital for a healthy and happy state of mind, and according to Wella Professionals Trend Vision forecast, it is a key trend seen in all areas of our lifestyle, from interior design to the beauty world, as well as our hairstyle.
The German hair and beauty brand enlisted its famed global creative director, Josh Wood, to translate this trend into the Sensual Colour collection, which includes four looks that demonstrate how colour can reveal the sensuality of your hair.
Based in London, Wood is one of the world's top hair colourist and hailed as an innovator in hair colour.
"Sensual colour is about putting passion into hair with many layers of smouldering colours that enhance a strong femininity," Wood said of his idea for the four cutting edge looks: Sensual Nature, Sensual Fusion, Sensual Drama and Sensual Poetry.
A tribute to nature and the autumn season, the Sensual Nature chic short hair look combines rich autumnal tones with voluminous styles while soft layering makes sensual hair come alive, revealing rich natural browns and coppers alongside softer, lighter hidden shades.
Browns are also a key colour for the bolder Sensual Fusion cut, but with greater impact from beautifully veiled textures infused with multiple bright accents, combining both warm and cool spicy browns. The colouring, therefore, evolves at every turn to express hair sensuality.
Sensual Drama takes it inspiration from seeing the world as a stage for self expression _ and with long hair, you can get this look and put yourself in the spotlight. A colour code of seduction, the contrasting blackberry and dark cherry is used for this drama queen haircut that showcases healthy long strands.
In contrast, the Sensual Poetry look is inspired by a serene world full of romantic, poetic dreams that give an ethereal lightness and transparency to the wavy, long hairstyle. The cut also involves layering to shimmering hair colour that are offset with muted pastels.
The four looks are created by Wella Professionals' colour palette and layering techniques, which achieve multi-dimensional results, and greater richness in tones, offering a sensual colour effect.

Paris Spa pioneers a new approach for youthful-looking skin

Starting as a beauty parlour specialising in French facials, today Paris Spa offers face, hair and body treatments for a complete head-to-toe pampering. Its expertise in delivering facials has attracted a steady stream of clients who come for Thalgo treatments at its outlets located at the Peninsula Plaza and the Alma Link Building.
The double mask technique involves placing strips of a pre-cut mask on wrinkled areas before a cooling gel mask is layered onto the face and neck.
As Thalgo has launched a new age-defying skincare range, the spa has revised its menu to include three new facials to cater to clients of different age groups.
"Body and skin functions start to slow down in your 20s but we don't see its effect straight away. So having anti-ageing facials from the age of 25 and caring for the skin will help delay signs of ageing," said Thalgo international training manager, Joanne Mazztelli, who was in Bangkok to introduce the new spa approach for youthful-looking skin.
The 25-30 age group are recommended to have the Collagen Smooth Treatment, which addresses first wrinkles and expression lines. As wrinkles become more noticeable in your 30s, the Hyaluronic Filler Treatment has been designed for this age group. Troubled by deeper wrinkles plus sagging skin, those between the ages of 40 and 50 need the Silicium Super-Lift Treatment.
The Hyaluronic Filler Facial coffret (35,000 baht) for six treatments.
Thalgo is a French company known for harnessing the science of seaweed and blending marine active ingredients into skincare products. To keep pace with cosmetic procedures, it drew inspiration from collagen and hyaluronic injections at the dermatologist's office to develop the facials but of course results are not as dramatic.
"At the dermatologist's office, cosmetic procedures give quick results but can be aggressive as there may be skin peeling afterwards," Mazztelli noted. "Spa facials are gentler and consider soothing the skin after a treatment especially with rehydration. And the skin needs to be rehydrated just like a flower needs water to bring it back to life."
A course of facials is recommended and that comes with a coffret containing spa products for six treatments. The Hyarulonic Filler coffret for instance comes with six tubes of hyaluronic filler, six sheet of pre-cut mask and a tube of hyaluronic gel mask.
The 90-minute Hyaluronic Filler facial starts off with deep cleansing, followed by exfoliating the skin with Resurfacing Cream. After applying the hyaluronic filler on areas with lines and wrinkles, such as the forehead, crow's feet and laughter lines, the therapist gives the skin a Dermastim massage, administered with stimulating massage techniques to enhance the absorption of the filler.
The following Double Mask technique involves placing the pre-cut mask strips on wrinkled areas and the hyaluronic cooling gel mask is layered on the skin of the face and neck and left there for 20 minutes.
After wiping off the double mask, the skin is toned and moisturised, and the facial rounds off with a shot of fruity-flavoured beauty drink.
Also requiring at least six treatments, the Silicium Super-Lift Facial involves a double hyaluronic and cryo-sculpting mask to fill deep wrinkles and reshape the face. In addition, gauze dressing is used for a mechanical face-lift.
The new skincare formulas and Thalgo's facial techniques really make a difference, Mazztelli affirmed, and moreover, the anti-ageing approach is to nourish the skin from the outside, as well inside by drinking the Collagen booster containing marine collagen, vitamins C and E.
"The spa facial provides an intensive treatment and it is followed by using skincare products on a daily basis," she said. "Compared to using skincare products for a month, taking the supplements for 10 days can give better and faster results."
For Paris Spa at Alma Link Building, Chidlom Road call 02-655-2550; or 02-652-2186 at Peninsula Plaza, Ratchadamri Road.

GIVE THE SKIN A LIFT

Wrinkles and expression lines can come in your 20s and the skin begins to need more than a good moisturiser. The 30's brings more noticeable wrinkles and hopefully that high-performance anti-ageing cream can fight back.
If not, be prepared for the falling 40's when a collapse in the skin structure results in deeper wrinkles and skin slackening.
Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Replenishing Comfort Creme Light.
Half way to being a centenarian, the 50-something may celebrate with more signs of ageing becoming prominent on the lower half of the face, such as laughter lines and a sagging facial contour.
But beyond the age of 60, why bother about wrinkles because not having them can be weird.
Still people want to look good at any age and anti-ageing skincare products are always coming out with the promise of youthful skin.
Skincare brands make it easy for you to step up your beauty regime with formulas to help ageing skin get through the years.
Estee Lauder first anti-ageing cream was introduced in 1956, and thereafter the Re-Nutriv line was thought to be a lifting formula for mature skin. Launched this month, Re-Nutriv Replenishing Comfort Creme Light has been formulated for women in their late 20's to start off an anti-ageing skincare regime. Suitable for dry and delicate skin, the cream contains Omega3 Phyto complex to nourish the skin.
To combat signs of ageing in the 30s, Darphin recommends Ideal Resource Smoothing Retexturizing Radiance Cream with the Line Polish Complex: a blend of white hibiscus, Centella asiatica, and knotweed extracts.
The 40-something needs to refirm the skin and reshape the face. Thalgo Silicium Programme has three formulas, all containing marine silicium as a key ingredient to help soften wrinkles and help give the skin a lift.
