Prime Minister Hun Sen arrives in Bali, Indonesia, today with a team of senior government officials to attend the ASEAN summit being held there this week.
Attache Sry Thamrong told the Post the summit would mainly involve discussions on respecting sovereignty, independence and cultural co-operation among ASEAN nations.
“We are looking forward to bilateral meetings with Vietnam, Singapore, India, Australia, Indonesia and UN secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon alongside the program of the summit,” Sry Thamrong said.
“The Kingdom is preparing for the creation of an ASEAN community in 2015, so we have to respect the Asean constitution,” he said, adding that emphasis would be on co-operation in fighting against pirate activities on the seas and the Mekong, nuclear-weapon proliferation and corruption.
“We also need to focus on cooperation on the environment, health, disaster, economics and cultural issues, and on bringing together all our resources to connect ASEAN through functioning infrastructure including railways and highways.”
Hun Sen will attend the core summit program, which includes meetings with China, Japan, Korea and the US, and will deliver a speech on Saturday regarding next year’s summit, hosted by Cambodia.
