She was born Mayumi Yamazaki (山崎まゆみ / YAMAZAKI Mayumi) on August 4, 1971 in Shin’onsen, Mikata, Hyogo prefecture. Her nicknames are Dan-chan (だんちゃん) and Mayumi (まゆみ). Her stage name is derived from the fact that the kanji character 「檀」 can be either Mayumi or Dan.
